The relationship between spur length, beard length and bird weight confuses me.
My buddy killed a Tom Saturday a.m. that weighed 23 Lbs, 9.5" beard, small .5" spurs.
I killed one that afternoon that weighed 21.5, 8.5" beard with 1 1/16" spurs.
My assumption is that they were both two year olds. Same farm.
Why the differences? birth date, Genetics, or other?

There's no correlation between those 3, sometimes the heaviest are the youngest, sometimes young birds have longer beards. The only true definer of an older bird is longer spurs.

Weight and beard have zero to do with age. Although jakes typically weight about 14-15 lbs, have about 1/4" nub spurs, and about a 4" stubby beard.

I'd say adult gobblers, which is two years and up, have an average of nine inch beard and weigh 19 lbs.

Spurs on a two tear old are still nubby and blunt, and about 1/2 to 3/4 inch spurs. No curve or sharpness at all.

Three year olds, in my experience, have spurs in between 3/4" to 1" spurs, that are slightly curved and pretty sharp.

The big four year old plus gobblers that have sharp, inch and a quarter spurs, are my favorite. Doesn't matter if they got a 2 inch beard and weigh ten pounds. Spurs are where its at.
