For those of you who hunt big hardwoods on public or private, doesn't matter, be aware of the beech trees.

Done some scouting today and seems to me that there was more scratching under beeches than I've ever seen. I am well aware of turkeys loving beech nuts from my experience of fall turkey hunting in Alabama and also early spring in the hardwoods in Alabama and Tennessee.

Maybe the beeches on the places I went had a big crop? Maybe there were no acorns? Maybe the turkeys are very hungry?

Just don't over look them when scouting or when hunting in mid day. Or anytime for that matter.

I don't know about turkeys, but squirrels love them. Hunted in the Hoosier National Forest one time when the beech nuts were ripe, and I couldn't kill enough squirrels to get them out of that beech tree!

Agree. I see lots of scratching under beeches and have numerous ginormous trees where the leaves seem to always stay raked up.

Thanks for sharing this info, I was aware game animals liked them but didn't know that they liked them that much. Good info.

Turkeys absolutely love beech nuts. However, I've never seen beech nuts on the ground in the spring that weren't rotten. The beech crop is spotty and only produces good once every few years. When the nuts fall, they are eaten quickly by every nut eater around. The ones that are over-looked rot or root quickly.
