Beginner Call

Im looking to start turkey hunting this spring and was wondering about what call i should get. I know that the mouth calls are harder to master but i think that is what i would like to use. Any suggestions on one for a beginner?

I like Preston Pittman calls.

Never really noticed any difference as to any that are easier to use than others myself.

you might want to get a H.S. call first till you get use to them then go for the woodhaven calls an pittman they are the best

What renegade said, the box and slate are much easier to master. They've been the death of the majority of turkeys in the last few decades. Mouth calls are great, but a lot easier to hit a wrong note on. However, Sounding good is only part of the battle, learning when to call and what calls to make is the part that only getting out there can teach you.

I'd get a cheep single read mouthcall to get started on. Practice making high sounds that quickly drop to low sounds. Once you get this down , the yelp, you can add other things to it. I remember for me, getting use to the tickle took a while and getting solid sounds to come out did too. Keep at it though, the more you practice, the better you'll get.

Invest in a quality custom slate friction call made by some of the better custom call makers. ( olegobbler.com has many of those custom call makers on the board)A good custom friction call can make the inexperience caller into a cotegory of better then average real quick. Can make the difference of shooting a turkey or not shooting a turkey. I started out like most hunters using a Primos call and thought it was pretty good until I invested in a custom call.

I agree with Renegade on the box or slate
when I started with a mouth call I used a single reed
just to get the hang of it

No need to spend money on custom calls. Get you an inexspensive (pot) slate call and master the cluck and yelp. More turkeys killed with those two sounds than any other. Easy to make and hard to mess up.

Learn to use a mouth call, and you will kill far more turkeys then skipping that step, as far as calling is concerned. Nothing is more versatile then a mouth call period.

I use pretty high dollar friction calls, most of them are custom, whatever that means. Sure they sound great, but I am not sure it makes a hill of beans difference. It is more what you say, and when, rather then how it sounds IMO.

If I wanted 1 super friction call, then there is not a better call then a Darrin Dawkins Aluminum, as far as mouth calls, Original Billy Yargus from woodhaven, is by far the best mouth call I have personally used.
