I have hunted turkey for only the last two years. I have really gotten into it, but haven't been good calling and getting birds to respond with a slate and mouth call. I'm just no good with them yet. A friend I hunt with can call birds in, but when he's not there, the hunting is slow.

That being said, what do you think the best call for beginners is? Also what about calling techniques to get birds to respond in different situations etc? Anybody have any links or advice?

I appreciate any info.

When I first started turkey hunting,I got a good box call to start with, these are the easiest call to learn in a short time and they sound good!

Same here when I first started. If you get a pot, make sure it's properly conditioned. Find some clips online or maybe a CD of real turkeys to listen and mimic (vs. listening to hunters). Concentrate on cadence, rhythm, and volume more than anything. Build your confidence (practice, practice, practice) and don't worry if you make the occasional squawk or squeak...even real turkeys do this.

You'll know you're practicing enough when everyone in your house has totally gone nuts and says, "Take that racket OUTSIDE!"

You sound a lot like me, the first yr I turkey hunted all I could do was get them to gobble from the truck. Whether it was my sound, trying to get to close I dunno. The next yr I bought a primos jackpot, and owl call. IMO the best time for beginners to learn/ build confidence is at the crack of dawn. Locate try to get w in 100 yrds or close as possible. Do soft calls purrs, yelps. Learn to read the gobbler and give him almost everything he wants remember he many times needs to get frustated to come to you. I've turkey hunted for four years the jackpot really worked well for me the last two seasons killing four long beards and calling in about 5 others that for one reason or another I couldn't get a shot. This yr I'm Gunna use my slate less and try to depend on my diaphragms/ box call. Id like to see myself kill a late morning bird or two... My best advice to beginners as far as killing birds is don't try to do to much...

A slate call is a much easier friction call to use than a glass, crystal, or aluminum. Get a Woodhaven or Southland Game Calls slate and check out you tube for examples of calls. If you're looking for a good and easy mouth call check out the New Energy Scott Ellis signature call from Woodhaven. It is awesome and easy to make sound good.

I would get a CD of live turkey sounds and listen to it over and over. You have to know what you are trying to mimic. The actual sound is not as important as the cadence, and you need to know what the different sounds mean. You have to have an understanding of the language, so to speak.
