Started off Saturday morning with birds gobbling everywhere on a new lease I got in this year. Got setup on two birds that were roosted in a pine thicket. Did two fly downs and they cut me off. Finally they pitched down, but was headed away from me. Kept working them and ended up having 3 different gobblers working on my right side about 150yds out. Then out of nowhere I hear one drummito my left. Ease my head around to look and there he was at 40yds blowed up and spinning. As I tried to move and adjust for a shot he caught me. He spooked, I rushed the shot, clean miss!!! Needless to say I was sick about it.
Went prospecting and got on what I believe was two of the three other birds I had heard earlier. They were henned up pretty good and the hens drug them away. Game over with those birds. Went back to the camp to gather my thoughts and relax for a minute.
Decided to go to a portion of the lease I had not spent much time on and look around. As I popped into a long narrow field I spotted two toms about 350yds away fighting. Pretty awesome sight. I quickly setup and began calling but from where I could see them. The wind was howling pretty good and they apparently couldn't hear me. Good thing is the wind was in my favor for a little sneaky sneak. Cut off a large portion of the sneak by easing through the woods. The last 75 ish yards was all on my belly bear crawling. Got as close as I could and let it eat. The Indian Creek and Federal 3rd degrees did their job.

Sunday morning. Had an awesome Easter service at church with the family. Went to the in laws for Easter activities. Then asked my 9 year old if he wanted to go try and get on one. He was all for it so we went home, changed clothes, and headed for the lease.
Pull up to the lease and as we are getting ready to strike out after em, I decided to yelp a few times on the Crystal Mistress to see if anything was close. Well bam! That amazing sound we all love cut me off about 200yds away. We quickly rushed down the hill about 50yds from the truck and got setup in the best spot we could without bumping him or him seeing the truck. I tried everything I could with this bird and he was tearing the woods down gobbling but wouldn't budge. I tried light calling, aggressive calling, silent treatment, scratching in the leaves, you name it, but he wouldn't move. Finally I told my boy that we have got to make a move if we want him.
We traveled about 5-600 yds around just to get 100yds closer. I get us close to a tree we can plop down on and check him. He hammers! We quickly get setup and I check him again. This time he hammers and almost blows our hats off. Drake says daddy I see him. Sure enough there he was at 40yds and closing fast. He rounds the corner into the field we were setup on the edge of and Drake let him have a face full of Federal Heavyweight #7s at around 10yds. We both were overwhelmed with joy as this was his first turkey ever. He is absolutely hooked and I couldn't be more excited. He's killed plenty of ducks, deer and now his first turkey. The smile says it all.
