I missed a gobbler at 20 yards today with the bow. I took a nap and woke up to a gobble. I sat right by a big slab of limestone and called him straight to me. I drew back and got the pin on him. He picked up a little movement so he was looking hard and stepped into an opening through a few bushes. I sat up as tall as I could to shoot over the limestone. Got the pin on him and squeezed. Arrow smacked off the rock and went off into the trees. One more public land bird a little wiser now. If I hadn't been sitting cross legged, I could have got up on my knees to shoot over the rock. Oh well

Sounds like someone didn't count for the difference between line-of-sight and actual arrow flight. Tough lesson, but one that a significant amount of archers will eventually make in hunting situationsI got my t-shirt a looong time ago. :)

I looked and saw the arrow was below the line of rock, so I sat up as tall as I could, but it wasn't enough. I think if I had leaned to the left some, the rock would have dropped below the arrow. But I try not to think of the what ifs. I know to be more careful next time and am glad the bird is not wounded. Poor tree is a bit scratched up though. Arrow lost to the cedars

Drew on another one in the exact same spot today. Was kneeling so I could shoot over the rock. He got behind trees and I needed him to clear for a shot, but somehow he saw me and putted away.

Keep trying although I would recommend bow hunting them from a blind. You're really educating them getting busted.
yeah I'm educating them but on the bright side maybe they will be shot as smart old birds with long hooks. Or they are dumb enough to be called in a couple more times. I have a pop up blind thanks to a member here, but I don't want to use it this spring. It's a goal to use as much skill as I can muster, and whatever terrain features and cover I have, to kill one with nothing but my bow and calls (and camera).
