Been on here and old gobbler religiously everyday since deer season closed trying to learn more bout turkey hunting. I have killed a handful but wouldn't consider myself good just lucky lol. My question is does field size matter to turkey? I have a spot where I can bet a paycheck that there will be rooster 100 yards behind a small field on opening morning and have been for five years now , but I have never seen them in thee field even in the rain. There it is, throw those answersx at me

Thanks spit I understand that I guess I'm leaning more towards seeing birds in fields just picking. Like right now in this drizzle do they prefer big fields or small ones or should I not even look into that, greener is better?

from my experience a small field is more of a strut zone then a feeding area depending on whats in the field. Small fields are good set ups because the field is not so large that the bird can see you from a mile away (or not see you i should say) but they do not tend to "hang out" in small fields like the do in larger ones. Once the bugs start showing up they will be in the fields even more and a small field can really pay off especially if not larger ones are close by. However if there are larger ones close by then a small field will be 2nd choice per say.

as i said above they they are great for strut zones especially if the grass is low and the tom can be seen from a distance. small fields are great to keep an eye on during mid morning silence times.

again these are just my opinions based on experience.

That makes sense now Ren now that I read ur post and thought bout it these birds come off roost and make b line normally to a purty good sized field bout half a mile that I can also hunt

Pretty much what REN said. Unless you have your small fields dosed with clover/winter wheat and no other fields around lol

Is that the spot u hunt here in sunbright smstome if so good luck with him love those ol mountain birds
No Ive only seen one bird on the place I own over there. Seen one and got pics of that same one. Ive seen more birds there up toward the mountains but my place is down by the pines and RR tracks, out of the mountains.

This is a question that only scouting and hunting a particular area can answer.

I can think of a handful of fields in areas I have hunted where everytime you pass by it you think, "man there ought to be a turkey out there." Yet they never are. While other fields, the birds just seem to gravitate to.
