3rd trip to this spot on Yanahli paid off. There were several strutters and a few hens, I saw at least 2 or 3 longbeards in the group. A minute or so after I made some calls from the cover of a cedar tree, one hen got mad and started running straight toward me with 2 jakes following. They came up to 5 yards and I let one of the jakes have some Winchester supreme #6. Didn't want them to bust me otherwise I would have gone for one of the longbeards if I could have got one in range. I should head back sometime soon, probably Wednesday, and see if I can't get one of the big gobblers.

Used only my homemade bamboo 2-reed tube call.
Shot at 10.15 AM
Beard barely 1"
Spurs are just bumps
14.2 pounds if my cheap fish scale is accurate

Big gobbler next time. But I had told myself I'd shoot the first legal bird I could get a bead on, and I did. Now I killed my first turkey and it's time to get on the longbeards.

He smells charred, must me all the burned fields they are dusting in.

Thank yall. I got the legs & thighs skinned and put in the freezer to make stock with sometime later when I get the vegetables. Got the breast meat de-veined and such so it's as clean as possible and marinating in some salt/pepper water in the fridge. Should grill and fry it on monday night. Wings are in the woods behind the house, either to decay so I can get the wingbones or to be (hopefully not) eaten by a possum or yote. Saved the heart and liver for my next catfishing trip. I think I got the meat off pretty well for the first time. I'll say I've had a little experience with smaller birds so I knew where to cut.
