Literally. It was on the tree for less than two weeks and when I opened it up today to retrieve the SD card there were signs of water incursion. It is now deceased. I bought two and the other one is still working but I don't expect that to last. I have swapped batteries, let it dry and tried it again. No pulse. I will report on the warranty service as this is obviously a defective unit. For now, avoid these like the plague.

The night pictures are pretty grainy anyway. I can tell that a deer has antlers, but that's about it. I should have stuck with the old Primos Truth 35. The good news is I have a bunch of Primos Easy cams for just this sort of situation. I'm glad I grabbed a fresh one and brought it today. I won't miss a beat. I can buy 3 Easy Cams for the price of one of these and just swap the whole camera. The Easy Cams need a computer to update the time stamps. It's just easier to change the whole camera.

Just to give a quick update on my Moultrie customer service experience. After finding a brand new camera dead in the woods I was none too impressed. I filled out the online return form, boxed up the camera with no batteries, SD card or straps and shipped it to Moultrie in Calera Alabama last week. I wake up to find a brand new Moultrie A-20I on my porch. Excellent turn-around, upgrade replacement (It is quite a bit smaller and seems sturdier) and no hassles. Time will tell if this camera works out, so I am keeping the paperwork. The other camera is still cranking out in the field, so thanks Moultrie. Good work. :D

Meh, I have used primos for years and thought I'd give another big name in the game a shot. I learned my lesson. So long Moultrie.

Re: Brand new Moultrie A7-I dead in the water.

The manufacturing quality control sucks with all brands, every one of them.
At present, I believe the Browning cams might be the best bet for the least problems, at least in the under $300 price range.

For certain, in the less than $200 price range, I'd advise to stick with Browning and Covert for fewer problems and supportive customer service staff.

Moultrie is the best by far, I've had an A7 out for a year and its still taking pix without A Battery change. Over 14,000 pix since march.

I assume you "fixed" it for me because of the American-made Reconyx brand have such a much better quality control history.
HOWEVER, I still stand by the original statement, of "every one of them" no matter what country their assembled.
This becomes particularly true today when weighed against price-point initial costs.

Reconyx has great customer service and has HAD perhaps the best quality control in the industry.
But that's become a bit questionable with their newest cam line that came out a little over a year ago, and their latest (the ones that produce 8mp pics) would be the ones most deer hunters would tend to purchase today.

Talking about the Reconyx UltraFire XR6 Covert IR 8MP Camera. They're selling for $599.99 at Cabela's.
That's a very high price for a trail cam, although over time, it COULD be less expensive than a single unit of some other brand costing much less.
But the bottom line is that many users, at least too many for that price point, have had quality control problems with this latest Reconyx.

So at least for now for me,
I'm finding a better overall value in purchasing four (4) new Browning Dark Ops units for the price of only one (1) Reconyx.
:tu:
Now, if someone else will pay for them, YES, I would prefer to own four new Reconyx cams instead of these new Brownings.

Re: Brand new Moultrie A7-I dead in the water.

I am never going to leave 600.00 strapped to a tree. I'll leave Reconyx for the well heeled and affluent. I just want a reliable camera that I can get 6 or 7 seasons out of that just shows me a reliable and accurate survey of what's moving on the farms. I am not at all happy with this new camera biting the dust. It did give me about 50 pictures before it died and the very last one was showing the rain that did it in.

If you find a China made camera for less than $250 that will do this, you have found GOLD. They don't make $250 cameras that will last 3-4 seasons on a regular basis, much less 6 or 7. Another thing to think about it by the time you realize a certain year and model is reliable and exactly what you are looking for, the parent company has switched the design, changed parts supplier and changed the manufacturing a handful of times, thus you can never get that old reliable model unless you get it off of a shelf somewhere, or off of eBay. Good luck with your quest!

Re: Brand new Moultrie A7-I dead in the water.

Well, I called Moultrie Customer Service regarding the untimely death of my A7-I Black Flash. The C/S rep put me through a hard reset procedure and made sure I was using the recommended SD card and batteries (I was). The camera still did nothing so it is being packaged up and returned. She said I should not expect the same camera or even model in return. I think there was a spate of issues with these particular cameras.

Thumbs up for Moultrie Customer Service and warranty. She was professional and courteous and my wait time was very reasonable. I filled out and submitted the claim form and the camera goes home for burial tomorrow. I will let you know the turn around time and what shows up at the door.

Re: Brand new Moultrie A7-I dead in the water.

I have used many moultries for 10 years now............I have stuck to them mostly because of familiarity, and the fact all cams that are in a reasonable price range get bashed a good bit......having said that I have never been more aggravated with the d-500's I bought last year..they have a built in program that is freaking ridiculous to get it off of and it just takes pics by the hundreds and runs the battery down in 2 weeks. This is the most ridiculous cameras to figure out I have ever dealt with and the only ones by Moultrie I absolutely HATE!!! I have to primos easy cams............not much happier with them either...............oh well.

Re: Brand new Moultrie A7-I dead in the water.

Ive been running moultries since I started using cams almost 10 years ago. Ive only had one cam problem and it started this past season with the A5. I just bought 2 more A20 cams this year and 5 primos easy cams to leave places I only visit a couple times a year. Glad they took care of you

Re: Brand new Moultrie A7-I dead in the water.

That sucks. I had an A5 go out on me this weekend. Not buying any more moultries here

Re: Brand new Moultrie A7-I dead in the water.

you get what you pay for in camera's normally.

Re: Brand new Moultrie A7-I dead in the water.

I have had great success with the cabelas brand. In 3 years I have had 1 out of 10 go bad and they replaced because it was covered under the 1 year warranty.

I've got Covert Black Flash in 3 rd season
And those where $100 each....
And yes I've got 4 new Browing Black flash in the
woods now $145 each with a 2 year warranty and it including
a flash card.
With using them for work and personal I still feel I'm a head of
Reconx
