A few weeks ago I made some sourdough loaves. I sliced one thick and froze it for this purpose. I left the slices out overnight to get stale then soaked in cream, eggs, sugar, vanilla, and almond extract and cooked them in pure butter. I've done this before on camping trips and it's better in a sausage grease soaked cast iron pan.
