I know, I know, spare me :D !

After my dad & I doubled early Saturday morning, we rode around some to see how many turkeys would be out in the fields. We saw several strutters with hens.

But, one group in particular caught our eye, and we pulled over and glassed them to see what was going one.

There were three gobblers in a field, but they were within 10-15 yards of each other. EACH one had a hen in, the uh, hm, position :o !

That kind of threw water on my thoughts that one dominant gobbler did most of the breeding, and they weren't being shy about it, right there in front of each other. Anyone ever seem something similar?

They knew their days were numbered, better get it while the getting is good. :)

In all seriousness, what you witnessed does not undermine the philosophy that one dominant male does most of the breeding. The dominant male could have been killed beforehand, or around the corner with a larger harem of hens. There are too many unknowns to draw a conclusion from what you witnessed a single time.

I had a jake breed my hen decoy for 5 minutes opening morning if that counts. When he walked away he was awfully bowlegged.

The hen chooses whom she lets breed her and will not sit for any other tom she doesn't feel is the fittest. I find it very strange that many hens picked different toms they thought were the fittest. NOT normal breeding behavior, but very interesting, and I'm sure there is a reason, I just don't know what it would be

I have seen a hen bred by two toms one right after the other on multiple occasions.
