My brother in law, said that he was shooting his bow the other day and he knocked an arrow and took aim and when he repleased it,he said it sounded like a dry fire! He didn't know what happend.Upon further inspection,he said that the arrow had broken in 2 peice when he released it,he said the front half with the broadhead on it was just a few feet in front of him and the back half, with the fletching went about 15 yds.He showed me the arrow and it did indeer break clean into.It was a carbon arrow..Any thoughts as to why it broke like that?

He is lucky he was not hurt. It probably broke because it had been hit, nicked or damaged such that some of the fibers had broken and the flex upon the shot was more than it could take. Always check your carbon arrows, always, visually and by flexing them listening for anything.

Generally, when a carbon arrow lets go the splinters are going to be driven into your hand/arm holding the bow. Any nick, cut, scratch or delamination of the arrow surface could cause a carbon arrow to shatter upon the shot.

I'll pass that along to him Buccaneer, and i'll be sure to check mine more often also.Didn't know they would go into your arm like that..

Are there any statistics out there on how often this happens? Is there anything about rate of failure, or is this just a matter of paying more attention to inspecting the arrows for any flaws?

That picture at the other site is awful.

It's not that bad, just rub some dirt on it and you're good to go!

Seriously, that looks awful. Has to be unbearable with all the splinters.
