My favorite slate call got broke when i moved. The slate is cracked all the way across. I love this slate for how it feels in my hand and the sound of it. Believe it or not I had a long talk with with a LongBeard with it more than once.
I was wondering what makes the tone of this slates. Is it the slate or the wood?
If I found someone to put another slate in it you think I could get the same sound?
I really do love this call and a feller on here made it. Its special to me.

To answer your question as to the tone in a slate call it is a combination of a number of factors that have and affect on the tone. Some of those factors are as follows:
 The density of the wood
What the soundboard is composed of (i.e. glass, crystal, wood etc.)
Type of wood that the striker is made from.
The distance from the top of your soundboard to the bottom of your top surface of the call (slate).
There are many factors that affect the tone and sound of a friction call.
Is the slate a standard 3.5 that is found on most calls? I make calls and would be glad to send you a 3.5 piece to replace it. If you put another piece of slate in that call use Goop to glue it in place and use is sparingly. If you use anything but Goop it may deaden the tone somewhat. Also examine your soundboard to make sure it is not loose or cracked. The most common reason for slate to crack is the wood in the call was green when the call was made. Another common reason is storing the call in a hot environment such as a hot car. Stoner

Someone can put another slate in for you. I don't see any reason it wouldn't sound just as good. I feel your pain I broke my favorate slate last season. I've lost count how many I've broken, I probably need to get a case.
