Brown spot on deer

What is this brown spot on a deers back legs? I keep seeing it here and there on cams, thanks

Tarsal glands. They're scent glands. Some hunters cut them off and hang in an overhanging branch to attract deer.
 
Bucks will frequently urinate over their tarsal glands while making scrapes. Apparently, this is a unique signature for that buck. I don't know that I've seen a buck urinate differently outside the rut. Maybe they urinate stretched out like a horse.
