Hey guys, forgive my in experience but all my years of hunting has been for hogs in the FL swamps. I moved here to McMinnville county a little over a year ago. Down south we really didn't have a very defined "rut" so I'm trying to learn. I have young bucks still traveling together on camera even last night. Does that mean the rut hasn't quite started in my area?

I'm not far from you at all in Sequatchie and it's definitely a weird year. My father killed a small buck and tarsals weren't stained at all and no smell to him. Buddy seen 3 bucks still running together same day my father killed. I don't know what's going on. Usually muzzleloader season is on fire with activity.

Sometimes two bucks will buddy up for the long haul and even stay together during the rut. Typically, they are different age classes. The rut will start with chasing and peak soon.

Where in FL did you move from? I moved here 4.5 years ago from Ft. Myers. I used to fish mostly but would hunt Alva, Labelle, Naples, etc a few times per year.
I lived in Hudson FL (about 20 miles NW of Tampa). I also did a lot of fats fishing mostly near Anclote and Tarpon Springs, I had a 18 ft Polar flats boat. I hunted Green Swamp and Chassahowitska mostly and Croom a little.

There are no hard rules. Bucks sometimes stay together throughout the year, including rut. Sometimes a buck won't rut at all, or might skip a year. We often get too caught up thinking generalities are stone set rules. They're not.

Green swamp had a big buck come out of there years ago. How many people you meet in FL that were actually born there. I already know the answer. Just asking from your neck of the woods.

I watched 4 bucks all lightly sparing today. At one time three of the four were all locked together. As stated above there are no "rules" to it. I saw the most deer in one sit today than ever. Some bucks were pestering the does, some were all out chasing, some were just following and a couple didn't act like they cared a thing in the world about the doe that were around.

I had two spikes and a 5 point chasing each other around in circles like a merry go round today. They then chilled out and walked off together
