I was on some gobbling birds this morning in Shelby Forest and had a red fox sneak in on me. He took a look at me and turned to head back the way he came, stopped again and then bolted in another direction just as a big, fat hog mosied in and rooted around 20 yards in front of me for about 5 minutes.
I'll admit that it took a little restraint not to deflate that hog :|

No offense, but you might need to work on your calling skills :D !

Did they mess up your birds, or did they just not want to play?

I have never used one, but have heard high praises about the Thermocells. Have you ever tried one?

When the lowlands turn mean, it can be no fun. I cut my teeth in the big river bottoms of the Deep South and there were days I wanted to turn the gun on myself.

With that said the worst mosquitoes I've ever seen were here in east tn in the strip mine country. I've been to Central America and this was worse.

....but there were so many mosquitoes that the Thermacall would basically keep them off my head so long as I was sitting still and had the Thermacell right next to my head.
I know what you mean. I was about 40 miles north of you this morning in the same environment (swampy river bottoms) and they were laying into my a$$. I sprayed an entire 6 ounce can of Deep Woods OFF and ran my Thermocell the entire time and it "kind of" kept them at bay, but the effectiveness waned as the day progressed and they became more determined. I'd like to set the woods on fire when they are that bad. If the turkeys would eat them, they have to weigh 30lbs by the end of season.

I live 10 mins from Shelby Forest, every indication ive seen leans towards the fact that SF is absolutely over run with hogs. Not that I've seen a single thing indicating TWRA has made a valiant effort to control them and us hunters cant incidentally take a hog while on a hunt. :bash: :stir: :stir:

As for the skeeters, we have had a lot of rain, the river has been up, its a cesspool of West Nile and other mosquito-transmitted viral diseases LOL
