My friend Brandon has been trying for his first turkey for a couple years now, grew up deer hunting but new to turkeys...he's got some land next to a WMA I hunt, and lets me hunt on it, and I have tried in the past to get him on a bird.
Well he killed his first turkey this year on another property, a jake he walked up on.
Today we went to a new farm he got on to listen for roost gobbles. Absolutely dead quiet, kind of disappointing.
Long story short, we drove around, walked around, set up and called, was not looking to be a good day for gobbling or birds in fields.
Finally struck one while we were on top of a ridge in a cow pasture. Had a hen yelping too, but went down into the valley in the shade and set up in a blowdown.
The hen showed up within seconds of calling, and was within 10 yards before the tom gobbled up the hill and strutted around behind cedar trees.
The hen never busted us, she drifted off a little, but stayed around while the tom put on a heck of a show about 45 yards out behind cedar limbs.
Finally after some patience and a little light calling, I got him to venture down the hill to the shade of another cedar tree at 33 yards. All he had to do was clear a few vines, and Brandon put a serious hurt on that toms noggin.
I got some awesome video of this bird, I'll work on that later
