My grandfathers left me an old Remington Sportsman 48. It does have a Weaver choke in modified but the other tubes were lost long ago. Im sure you cant shoot anything but lead shot out of it. Only 2 3/4 inch shells.

Since I mostly archery hunt for turkeys, do you think it would kill a turkey under 30 yards? I have some high brass six shot that I want to use. It is what I used on Pheasants in Kansas.

Just love to get a turkey with it. Ive killed numerous doves Pheasants quail and squirrels with that gun.

I'd check to see if its throwing a consistent pattern, then go for it.

That would be cool!

My dad killed several birds with his Rem 1100 (12 ga) and modified choke.

When I started turkey hunting I killed all my first birds with an old 2 3/4" 12 gauge with a modified choke shooting lead shot so I don't know why you couldn't if you worked them in close.

30 yds may be a stretch, but pattern it @ 30 yds and see what it looks like. If it looks ok, go for it. If not try 25 yds.

One thing I'm pretty sure of, is that if you can get them in closer than 25, you will have a dead turkey if you aim straight.

Why would you not be able to shoot non-lead shot? One of my buddies wanted to kill a turkey with his granddads old stevens 94c. I made him some 2 3/4" tungsten 9s and he's killled a limit with it. The pressues are the same and you're not trying to force it through an overly tight choke.

I think you would be fine to shoot HTL at it, it's not like your going on a dove shoot and shooting 4 boxes.
Just shoot at a target and see. I think within 30 yards you'd be ok. I killed a lot with 2-3/4" 12 gauge with an improved cylinder when I first started, (that's all I had and it worked and we didn't know any different back then)

I'd love to try again with my old guns, but honestly I'm scared of the challenge hahaha.
