Can someone tell me why you root for your conference rival?

I just don't understand why or how you want a team like, for example) Alabama to keep on winning and winning. Yes I understand it was Ohio state but still it doesn't matter who it was for me. IMO The cycle will just keep on going if these teams don't start losing more often. When I say cycle, I'm talking about landing multiple 5*s after another national championship. These guys will start understanding that other schools can win the big game. I know this is just one of many factors.

It just drives me crazy when tennessee fans want their biggest rival, one of the most hated teams they play, to win a National Championship???

I really didnt care who won:/ I was glad Oregon beat FSU and were going to the N/C game and I was hoping they would beat Bama or Ohio st. There so I really didnt care much about the Bama/ohio game.
but I LOVE to watch bama lose just brings a smile to my face mostly because the bama fans think there team is unstoppable and will never lose so for bama to not even make it to the N/C game after fans said they would kill ohio st. And win by DOUBLE digits is funny. If you read my bama vs. Ohio St. Topic post I was Hoping ohio st. Would win even when they was getting beat I was still pulling for them.

Gets old hearing stuff like bama will be in the playoffs again next season really?, bama should beat ohio st. By 10 hoping for a blood bath, not worried about Ohio st. More worried about FSU haha, ROLL tide!, The Lane kiffin hire was the best thing Since sliced bread, after hearing stuff like that over and over its funny to watch them lose

Regarding your question, I think it can be traced all the way back to the Civil War. With some SEC fans, I believe there is an attitude of the "South" vs everyone else.

*Im sick of the fans thinking saban is a god, And Kiffin is a king.
* Im sick of there fans thinking there an unbeatable unstoppable force.
* Most teams that play them are the underdog and I love watching the underdog win.
* I Love watching bama fans eat there words and make up reasons for the lose.

Regarding your question, I think it can be traced all the way back to the Civil War. With some SEC fans, I believe there is an attitude of the "South" vs everyone else.

Good point vermin93 never thought of it like that. But yeah I think the south the SEC wants to have the best football teams they dont want the NORTH winning N/C so they pull for bama so they can say haha the south won the sec won were the best.

Believe it or not, but someone actually wrote an article about this phenomenon in the SEC. The article is called "Why SEC fans exist".

- Sharing in the benefits of winning, which comes from a social identity theory called "basking in reflected glory (BIRG)"

I agree 100%!!! The more the Fighting Updykes win the stronger they get. It's idiotic! Just so you can say the SEC won another NC? If the only way the SEC gets another NC is the Gumps win it I hope they never get another one. Besides, the Bandwagon Nation is annoying enough. Why would you want them to boast more (if that is possible)?

I think conference bragging rights is why. I work with folks who are big 10 and ACC guys and we talk trash a lot. I hate Alabama but when they play out of conference I pull for them. Don't want them winning another championship but hate OSU worse so I was for them. Had they won I'd be for Oregon which I am anyway.
