I cant seem to make myself keep the pin on the target and then squeeze the release. I have a tendency to pull up and jerk the trigger. What can I do to practice NOT doing this?

sounds like target panic. there are better experts than I on here that can explain it better than I can.

You have the samething I have fought for the last two years and just now have learned in the last 3 months how to control itit's called target panic, or it will be soon if not corrected now. Basically, the your brain has been trained through operant conditioning to get that arrow off of that string as soon as you get near your aimpoint. You have to retrain your brain using the same process in which you learned, or are learning that bad habit. After stuggling with all of the different advice as far as back tension releases, blind shooting, hold and let down and on and on and on...this is what I finally did to HELP correct it. Notice I said to "help" correct and not to fix.

First, find or make, a very small mark on a treeor something eye level that will not hurt if you accidentally fireand stand 3-4ft in front of it. Nock an arrow and draw and hold with your finger OFF of the trigger. Now just float the pin over the mark and keep it there for 5 seconds and count it, then let downremember keep your finger behind the trigger the entire time! Then repeat, over and over again until you no longer feel "anxious" about having that arrow on the string. It is very important that you do not try to shoot at a target for several days. Just do that exercise until your blue in the face.

Now after your comfortable with that exercise, go to the target you normally shoot at and hopefully it has multiple targets to shoot at. This time stand 5 yards from it and do the same exercise you did in front of the tree except this time draw, focus on one target for 5 sec-then switch to another for 5 sec-then another-and then back to the original and then let down. Do that excerise repeatedly until your comfortable. Now several days, if not a week or so will have passed and your ready to finally shoot an arrow.

First, take your release and adjust it, if you haven't already done it, so that the trigger is off of your fingertip and it's deep in your fingeryour less likely to "jump" the trigger when it's deep in your finger and you will have better feel. Stand 6ft from your target draw, put the pin in the middle of your target and close your eyes, and ever so lightly squeeeeze the triggersurprise! That's what you want! Do this repeatedly until you get a good feeling of the pressure applied to the trigger.

Finally, you get to release some arrows for real. Stand 10ft in front of your target and do the same exercise I talked about beforegoing from target to target and holding on each one with your finger OFF of the trigger except this time when you go back to the original target hold on the target and then place your finger on the trigger and count to 3 and then squeeeeeeze. If you cannot hold it on there and want to jump the trigger, then your not ready and continue to do the target ranging exercise with finger off of trigger.

If you were okay there, move back to a greater distance but remember small increments!! The main thing is to keep your finger off of that trigger until you have convinced your brain that it is okay for that pin to be over the target, then you have to convince your brain it is okay your finger to be on that trigger and pin to be on targetthat is why you hold before you shoot. Shoot the daylights out of the 5-15yd marks until you have gained the confidence that YOU CAN do it, regardless of the signals coming from your brainthat ultimately is where the problem is.

I hope this helps, or at least gives you a starting point. I came up with that entire exercise myself after reading many, many, many articles/opinions on how to control the target panic that plagues me and I just combined different ideas from many, many, many article/opinions I have heard and read all into one and found it worked best for me. I still suffer from it, some days worse than others, but I have learned to control it/manage itI can now again hold a two inch group at 40 yds, where before I would be lucky to just hit the dang target.

If you have any other questions, or want to PM mefeel free to do so.

Best of luck!

Get in the Zone. Practice remaining calm and let the pin settle on the target instead of forcing it there. This works for me whether I am shooting my bow or a rifle.

I didn't have time to read the above posts, but if it hasn't already been said, you should practice "blank bale" stand about 5 or 10 feet(not yards) away from your target. Draw, aim at the center of the target, close your eyes and ease the trigger off(keep your eyes closed until your follow through is complete. don't worry about where the arrow hits. Shoot 10-15 shots this way before you shoot and see if it helps.

how heavy of a release trigger are you shooting pinstick? i have same problem. it will go away, most of the time doing what they said on above post. practice a lot also.

IDK what the release. It is real light. I am already shooting better. I have been making myself wait for a few seconds before I pull the trigger rather than as soon as it gets there. Thanks guys.
