I am new here to tndeer. What is everyone's forecast on the catoosa deer hunts this year? After last years very low harvest is deer hunting gonna be better this year? Is the low harvest due to low deer density? Is low harvest due to roughly 60 percent of the 80,000 acres being too thick to do anything with? In my opinion It was shocking there was so many left over permits this year for the muzzle loader and second gun hunt even after they lowered the quota to 1000 per side and taking away the second muzzle loader. Have people gave up on putting in for it and are going else where? Also why are they spraying the road sides now instead of bush hogging?

Good questions. I'm waiting for the answers. I drew for muzzleloader tag. I haven't hunted there going on 15 years or so. I was really hoping things were better there and seems all I hear is how bad it is. While I never used to see a lot of deer, there was usually a few.

It's gotten out that the place is what's known as a 'gar hole'. In my last several years there, I've seen more hogs and bears than deer. I mean, it's a place to hunt, if you like sitting all day.

I heard they started spraying the roadsides because the folks in charge claimed that diesel fuel for the tractors was too expensive.

Been one time. Got in early, at daylight there were more people than you could imagine walking around. Not interested in public land with the amount of people on those quotas. I think there were 1200 on each

They have mowed it this year in places.

Last couple years have been the worst I think. Also last couple years the area has been covered in more people than when it was a bonus buck. Lots of inconsiderate hunters walk all over the top of you. I've seen deer last couple years but not the good ones I use to see. Lots of 4 wheeler trails so it's hard to be far away from some kind of access. So when you think your away from everyone your not.

I started hunting it in the early 90s and killed a few small deer. It has never been a great place to hunt in my opinion. Seems to have all the potential and poorly managed. I gave up hunting there around 2002. I'm not surprised it still sucks.

Bears eat a lot of fawns. The northern plateau in general will never return to what it has been in the past unless/until bears are exterminated. Locals are definitely working on that hard but it's not easy when it's illegal and sows are having 3 and even 4 cubs.
Dont hold back, tell us how you really feel about bears!?

I have no use for bears. They are creeping closer and closer. Nothing but a unwanted nuisance. I wish everyone would SSS!

I've hunted it off and on since the early 80s. I've never killed anything but time there...and gotten lost twice.. 😂

I've seen deer, but nothing that fit their requirements.

As far as getting away from people...hasn't been difficult. Seems like a bunch of folks want to hunt the same area, so you have high density areas. I/we avoid those. Don't want to end up shot. Seems like someone gets shot there ever so often. No thanks. We didn't even put in for it this year.

About 15 years ago, maybe a few more, a buddy of mine and me were scouting on the bicolor side and saw a bear track. TWRA used to have a call in show that aired on tv. I called them and told them what we saw and the officer laughed at me and said it was a dog track and I was basically an idiot that no bears were in Catoosa.

I am with you, hogs and bears have destroyed deer and turkey populations
