I shot a buck Monday (KY) with my 300wsm 150gr NBT at about 80 yards. Heart shot through the left front shoulder. Now, usually this shot is a "bang-flop" kinda if shot, even with 200Lb+ deer. At most they run 20-30 yards. But this dude ran almost 100 yards into a head high CRP field. Now, as you could expect, I was shocked. Thinking my shot was off. Waited 15 mins went to site and found "lung blood." But bc I thought the deer was a bigger different deer we called "the short g2 buck." I elected to wait 2 hours prior to tracking. Not much blood….. specks. But I literally found two large pieces of lung down the trail about 30 yards from the site. The bullet broke left front should and obliterated the heart, and tore out lungs. Deer still ran 100 yards and out of my site. I thought it was very strange. But I will post a pic of the lungs I found. Yall ever had something like this happen? Also, this is the smallest KY buck I have ever taken. I was super sick earlier in the week and I let buck fever get to me 😂 Oh well, he got my heart pumping and I had a dang good time. Oh and my buddy shot the buck I thought I was shooting.

Strong willed animals. Have shot older bucks and hit both lungs and had them go over 400 yards. Then some like the one I killed Sunday morning, hit both lungs and bang flop. Bullets can make a difference, the deer I have killed over the past 5 years with rifle have been shot with eldx, 308 178 grain, and then the last one with a 143 grain eldx from 6.5 cm. Those have all been bang flops.

Congratulations to you and your buddy, both look like nice bucks.

Sounds normal to me. The only time a deer drops in his tracks is if you disrupt the CNS (brain or spinal cord). If you don't disrupt that, a deer is going to run until there isn't enough blood reaching the brain to keep him awake. Usually 5 to 7 seconds for a heart shot. A deer can run 100y no problem in 7 seconds.

I believe they can and do tun as long as they have oxygenated blood in their muscles to use regardless of the condition of their heart or lungs....how far can you run holding your breath?
I agree. Cousin shot one at 8 yards with 300 RUM… it literally blew handfuls of lung and heart out of the chest cavity. You could see through it like a window. Deer ran (albeit down hill) at least 100 yards. Was running so fast when he went down it broke his skull and the antlers were flopping

Man I wish I could shoot a small buck like that! Deer are tough as nails. My daughter heart shot a buck with a 2 inch Shwacker a few weeks ago and that sucker still ran 100 yards.
