Due to JROTC events that my Cadet's had to attend, I decided to hunt Eastern TN this past weekend....and will hunt it again next weekend. I looked up information on google maps. The spot I picked is roughly 75 minutes from where I teach here in SW VA.
When I got down to where I wanted to access the WMA, I figured I would pick a farmer's brain. The first one I stopped and talked with was very nice. I asked how hard the birds were hunted, he said hard, but that he had a spot in the WMA that you had to hike to .... and no one liked hiking to it. It was 1 1/2 miles of switchbacking up hill via a gravel trail (they block it off to keep trucks out), then a mile down a grassy trail. It brought you to a field that had a small pond...called Jon's pond. I got there at first light and didn't hear any gobbling, so I set out my decoy and did a little bit of calling, nothing agressive or loud. I did have one bird sound off 30 minutes into it, but he only gobbled once. After an hour he didn't show up, so I went to another field that was close by and set up, as the sun was hitting it. I spent a couple hours there with no luck, so I figured I would call all the way back to the truck, hoping to strike something up.

Part way back I heard something come out of the bottoms at the edge of the switchback, it was a 2-3 year old bear, he looked at me and scampered up the hillside. When I walked to where he had been I looked for him up the hillside, he was looking down on me. I used to love hunting black bears in Alaska, so that was great to see one here in TN.

We have events again this Saturday, so my goal is to go down Sat and Sun morning as this is the last weekend, might be more aggressive in my movement when I hear a bird gobble, as now I know the lay of the land better.....beautiful country!!

Now you are in Coweye 71's neck or the woods. I can assure you, according to coweye, there are no pet turkeys in that area. You, sir, will have your work cut out for you......Be on the lookout for the Googans, apparently they run rampant up that way...

And the turkeys are so pressured that there heads are about 3x the size of a normal turkey. Those are the only wild turkeys in the state of tennessee. carry some spare shells in case of a googan attack.

Yes, I believe I was around Holston Dam, I took a right on Wyatt Hollow road, stayed straight till I hit gravel, pull off was 1/2 mile on the right I believe. Not sure what a googan is, weather isn't looking so good right now for the weekend, which is a shame as I just put a new CX Blue Streak select in a 3" circle out at 70yds....guys at the rifle range were like who are you?

I believe that's off Denton Valley rd. In the Harper's creek area. Not been over that way this year, but have a friend who has tagged out with Shady Valley birds. Thats at the top of the mountain from where your at just up Hwy 421 towards Mountain City. BTW: Good luck.

There aren't many people on here from this area, maybe a handful or two but there might be a few lurkers. Plus most people wont walk that far anyways

^^this^^ you can have free roam of Cherokee NF right now. Most "turkey" hunters would rather hunt farms where your odds are much higher. There have been some areas that got pressure early in the season, but it's pretty much over now.

Well someone said it already...but I will repeat it, farmer was adamant that no one would walk that far to kill a bird, I was in uniform coming from a JROTC event, so I think he knew I would......just like on Ft Campbell, if you are willing to walk, you will get away from everyone and be by yourself.

Well then maybe I will have company on Saturday....in the end at this point, it is all about enjoying being outdoors. I would rather be home in Clarksville hunting private property, but I have a JROTC event on Saturday night. I only have a few more weeks in SW Va as I have accepted a teaching position at a Nashville HS....

No dis-respect intended, but this couldn't be further from the truth...Not when the areas have road completely around them and thru the middle of them..

Roost....I suppose you are right....but I rarely run into anyone bowhunting....last deer I shot there was 1.5 miles from my truck....warden helped me out....that was a long drag!!!!
