How are the roads on the wma? Do you need a truck? Or are they navigable by car?

Last time I was there you could get around any of the open roads pretty well with a 2 wheel drive truck. Some roads had washed in places and would be tough without ground clearance but those spots were relatively scarce. They get touched up as needed to facilitate logging so the main roads are in good shape.

Call TWRA or the Forestry office up there and they can probably tell you the ones to avoid.

Thanks I have a truck just trying to decide which would be better, gas saver or truck

I've made a trip or 2 up there in a car but wouldn't recommend it if you absolutely have to go everywhere. Most of the time you will be fine though.

Peavy Hollow in particular was rough but you could get around from the low side ok. Same for most of the others. You can get in from the low side if a spot is washed bad.

I spend some time up there during the small game seasons and have been able to get everywhere I want to go in a 2wd VW Tiguan. I haven't been everywhere in the place, but I've had no problems getting where I want to go.

Take the truck....
x2. You would have to really rack up the miles to make the savings worth it in my opinion. Assuming you drive 1,000 miles round trip (probably inflated), and the car gets 25 mpg, the trucks gets 15 mpg, and gas costs $2.00/gallon, you would save $50 in gas over the life of the trip to drive the car. Basically, is the $30-40 worth it to drive the car? Good luck Rock!

My only bad experience was when I went up there in a Dodge Stratus. We bottomed out and the low point of the car was the oil filter. The grass didn't grow back in that 2 track all summer. Thankfully I knew the forester and had enough coverage to make a call.
