back to the OP. i would have wash at 4. why not have the 4 unbeaten conf leaders in the top 4? let them control their own destiny.
what if A&M wins out? how do you drop them? they play miss, miss st, lsu
There's a fundamental misunderstanding about how the CFP selections work. Tuesday night's ranking wasn't a weekly poll, it was a
mock ranking showing who would be going to the playoffs if the season had ended this past Saturday. Next week the committee will start again
from scratch, and this week's rankings are supposed have
absolutely no impact on next week's.
So it's not a matter of A&M "dropping," or "getting passed by Washington" even if they win out. Each weekly ranking is independent, with the final one being the only "real" ranking. Last year was a perfect example: the CFP mock ranking after the final week of the regular season had Oklahoma #3 and Michigan State #4. Oklahoma didn't play championship weekend (no BIG-12 championship game), while Michigan State beat Iowa in the BIG-10 championship. So, as additional data points, both Oklahoma and Michigan State had conference championships (big point), while Michigan State also had a championship game win (big point), and another "quality win" (somewhat big point). The final rankings therefore had Michigan State #3 and Oklahoma #4.
The same will happen this year. If both Washington and A&M win out, Washington will have a conference championship, a conference championship game win, and an additional "quality win", none of which A&M will have. These are big points with the committee, and will almost certainly result in Washington coming in ahead of A&M in the "real" (non-mock) ranking.
