Is the top 15-20 teams really this even? There's been some really good games.
Did the portal even out the league this much?

I believe so, why it was the perfect time to expand the playoffs. I wouldn't be surprised if anyone in the playoffs won a game or two, that goes for a couple teams that didnt even make playoffs also. South Carolina, Ole miss, Bama or SMU...

Maybe but the games consisted of top teams in their respective leagues. I think SMU was overrated with a weak schedule and Clemson, Arizona State, and UNLV are not at the same level as the top group of teams including USC, Ole Miss, and Bama. They were all exciting games and it is cool seeing teams getting rewarded with their conference wins including Clemson with 3 losses.

I believe the portal and NIL has had a big influence on college football. Especially in the SEC. Colorado is another example though I don't care for Coach Sanders way of doing things

In addition, I think conference realignment has had as much of an impact over the last 15-20 years to get us where we are now with TV revenue sharing and bowl affiliations.

Now an overlooked recruit can go to a lesser program to make a name and enter the portal. By the same token , kids can leave those power programs to a lesser school for playing time and NIL monies…a high tide raises all boats, right?
