Have killed a couple now and my buddy killed one this year. The 2center feathers have white striping on them. Old age? Genes?

Genetics, I've killed a couple 2 year olds and a couple older birds with the white in the middle feathers

Is the quill itself brittle where the white barring meets it? If so, it's stress barring (similar to beard rot) and not genetic. Usually there are more than one though. If you look the bird over closely, you'll prob find a few more elsewhere on the body.

The only color gene that affects feather quality in poultry is the lavender gene.

If the quill is perfect, it may be a genetic trait, but impossible to isolate.

Old timers round here used to say birds with that characteristic have more of the "old strain" in them. I don't know but I've seen some like that and it's cool. Nice bird

There could be something to that.

I have a fan hanging on the wall here in my office of my best Catoosa bird from a few years ago that has the white in the middle tail feather.

For those who don't know, those birds are one of the two original flocks in TN.
