Couple of Pics

No. In fact I've had a couple of them within 15 feet of me, broadside, and wide open. Pretty bucks for sure but not what I'm looking for. I have a bunch of pics of them as well as videos. You can hear them raking branches, pawing the ground, and crunching on acorns in a couple of them. Like I've said in the past, I'm greedy. I want age and antlers, lol.

Nice pics, Mike. :)

But please tell me how it's being "greedy" to "let walk" 95% of the bucks you could have killed,
knowing that most of them will be killed by other hunters?

Seems to me you're being very "generous" to your fellow hunters. :)

Andy... I think he has a twin except one's a 9 and the other is a 10. I had bookoos of pics of both prior to rifle opening. Both of them are those small framed, Roman nosed deer that makes their racks look even bigger.

LBL... You're right. There's a bunch of guys up there over the years that are probably glad I'm so particular. I've said this before. I know a 125" buck is legal to shoot where we hunt but if these guys would let those walk, and particularly the 2.5 year olds, we might have some dandies running around.

I read a lot of posts that would lead you to think that Ames is crowded and no deer left....you have several on cam......Are you in a honey hole on the property ?

This year is my worst year ever for getting shooter bucks on camera. No, I'm not in a honey hole. If anything it's a dried up hole. In the past I've had at least 4 shooters and that's those I consider a shooter. Only 1 in my past 2 years although I've had a bunch of small bucks.

LBL... That's something that has always puzzled me about the arguments made statewide against hunters holding out for bigger bucks. By doing so it leaves a bigger population for those that desire to shoot anything with antlers.

I'd be you'd be killing more 150-plus class bucks at Ames if you had no antler restrictions at all, coupled with a 1-buck limit. Might be the case even with the 2-buck limit.

I've also been puzzled by how so often so many get things totally backwards.

1st buck is a coinflip between 3.5 nd 4.5, representative rack for his age.

2nd buck likewise a coinflip between 2.5 and 3.5... he's got an above average rack for his age... love to see that second buck next year.

Nice pics and nice buck's but they all are marginal bucks for Ames and would have to be passed this year. They are nice to look at and they give you a thrill but when you add them up they are too close to call IMO. To score an 8 must have 10-12 inch G2's and 8 inch g3's, beams 22 inches, good brows and decent mass.

Agreed. That's exactly why they walked away from me. No guarantee in what they might be next year other than I gave them a chance at seeing next year. Those are the kind of bucks I love/hate to see. They excite you until you finally get a good look at them and even then you're excited for the prospects of next year. At the same time they scare you and under the right circumstances could create a mistaken shooting. I call them pucker bucks because if you squeeze the trigger on one you stay all puckered up going to the checking station to have them scored and aged. I like those 1 lookers because that's all it takes to determine whether they're shooters or not.

So true Mike and the most difficult part of hunting Ames. Knowing the difference in an instant the difference between a pucker buck and a shooter. It takes years of experience no matter how many bucks you've scored on the ground. You have to develop the attitude that it's better to let a shooter go than to kill a marginal buck and that is very difficult to do in the moment of truth. Best of luck the rest of the season.

Mike that first deer kinda looks familiar, was that pick anywhere near me.

this was my first year on ames these were the best deer i had on camera all from the same camera all with in a few weeks of one another. all total there were about 9 different bucks on camera in just a few weeks. i don't think any of these deer would go on score at ames maybe age on the second deer i think they could all go on age next year hopefully all on score next year maybe crossing my fingers. if I'm off in my assumptions hopefully some vets from ames can give their opinion. I saw a buck on about 50% of my hunts just noting remotely close to 125" I've found it far easier getting a good deer on camera than in my cross hairs especially an older doe 3.5 years or older.. i feel like the doe age structure for does is really young there based on doe quota this may be contributing to a later rut just my opinion. ill give it a few more years for sure the largest thing to overcome is all the ground its to large to scout in a year or even 2, 3, or 4. I've had fun tho met some cool people
