Went to Tenn for a short hunt in an area I hadn't been in. A bird gobbles in the dark about 3/4 mile the direction I'm heading. Get setup and was close enough to hear him come out of the tree. He's absolutely hammering. I hear wing beats and look up to see a hen fly to him. He gobbles sporadically till about 9 then nothing till about 1015. I reposition and he cuts me off. Goes quiet for a bit and the next time he gobbles he made me flinch he's so close but he had swung under to my right. He pops up about 25 yards at 10 o'clock. I'm sitting in a clear cut so plenty of brush to ease my gun around but before I can move he putts and flys off. I didn't think he had seen me. When I stood up I seen what spooked him. There was a bear breathing down my shirt collar less than 15 yards. I still can't figure out how he was able to walk thru a bunch of briars, laurel and dead fall without me hearing him

Interesting....never hunted around bears, but never dreamed a turkey would be that scared of them. Is this "spooky" behavior normal around bears?

Yes. I've found bears will shut em up faster than anything. That's the fourth time thats happened. I've had yotes come between me and a bird and the bird gobbled at him and went back into strut. That's the exception and not the rule but even the ones that get spooked seen to calm down pretty quick. Bears seem to shut em down rest of the day for some reason.
