What a way to close out the juvenile weekend. We hunted before church this morning and either saw 4 or 6 doe but was buck hunting . I wasn't sure where to go this afternoon as she wanted to kill a buck. I took a little nap after church and prayed to choose the right place. I was set on going to one spot but decided to go back to the cut bean field that we went to yesterday afternoon at the last minute.
We saw a deer going in and got set up around 4. We hadn't saw anymore deer, and it was getting close to 6. There is a logging road that comes up a point into the field that I've actually got a camera on about 40 yards in the woods. I happened to look in that opening, and a deer was standing in it which was about 80 or 90 yards away. I first thought it was a doe but saw antlers through the binoculars. I also saw another deer in front of it. It turned to go down the logging road, and I saw a bigger bodied deer step into the opening. I saw it was a decent buck and told her it was a shooter for her. Before she could get on it, it also turned and headed down the logging road out of sight. I could feel the adrenaline and was actually shaking a little bit hoping they would still come to the field.
My camera then went off, and I could see it was at the salt lick. I could tell from the last picture that it was facing back towards the field but no idea what it was going to do and could only hope. I normally don't pray for these things but prayed if it was the Lord's will that the deer come back to the field. My daughter told me later that she prayed for the same thing. After a few minutes, I saw a deer's head looking out into the field about 50 yards to the right from where we last saw them. I saw antlers and seen it was the other buck. As it started into the field, I saw the bigger buck behind it. They entered the field feeding and sort of angled away from us. She got her gun around and on him. I turned the scope up and flipped the safety off for her. She was taking rest off of me. We had to wait for it to turn broadside and then get clear of another small buck that had came out behind it. Everything cleared, and I stressed for her to steady and take her time. She shot, and he never knew what hit him. It was a bang flop and probably fell about 20 yards from where her doe did yesterday.
It's her longest shot at 118 yds and second biggest buck. She actually killed it with my son's gun as she wanted to take it this afternoon. She's now got the 6.5 creed trifecta this year, one with each of her guns and now one with my son's.
The deer was a fairly big bodied deer for the area and think he may be a 3.5 yo with smaller antlers. Will confirm when I pull the jawbone.
What an awesome and blessed weekend!!!
