well nice morning, no birds gobbled on the limb though.
Finally struck up a hen just inside the edge of a field, as we went at it seeing who could be the loudest and most obnoxious the gobblers started hammering. Problem was the gobblers were off in the distance headed our way but there were 3 problems... First, she was between me and the gobblers... second, she was in an open spot that she didn't want to leave to come into the thicker area I got caught in and third, she was a better caller than me...
As expected that didn't go well, after about 30 min of the back and forth she headed toward the gobblers and they shut up.
In retrospect I probably should have busted her before the gobblers got close then took her position on the ridge and tried working the gobblers.

oh well I'll be back at it in the morning... good times....

Hindsight is always ... well you know :) . If she was in the open, they may have busted you also.

That's what is so great about turkey hunting. The mind games, "what ifs", and "I shouda" after an unsuccessful encounter are what make it so addictive.

The interaction is what it's all about. Surely you aren't going to let a bird with a pea sized brain beat you at a chess game. :poke:

Pea brain... what do you think I'm working with? Mike they may be playing chess but I'm playing checkers...

Checkmated again this morning, at least there were a couple of birds gobbling on the roost this morning but they shut completely up once they hit the ground.
I'm getting closer though, I was able to work a bird to within 60 yards before he surveyed the open woods and decided there was no hen anywhere in those woods.

At least you heard some! Turkey hunting here in South MS is miserable... birds gobble rarely, and love to come in silent.

They gobbled good Thursday morning but shut up at 08:00, then Friday morning was the last morning I hunted and I didn't hear a single bird. They are still bunched up in north Mississippi.
