I went out this morning to listen to birds and probably heard at least 5 different gobblers on the roost. The bad news is so did about 6 other people. So how would you guys go about setting up in a bird that's being hunted by other hunters?

Re: Dealing with pressure

Well, If one gobbled that I could get to quick, I'd hunt him.

Just try not to get swarmed with # 9's. People Be Crazy!

If its public property try to be there first. If they are ethical they will move on. Most are, but not all.

Go where they want to be and be quiet. Don't make a peep. Chances are people will over call or push to close. Let the pressure do the work.

What others have said. Plus don't quit on them. They might start gobbling again later in the day if they feel like the pressure is gone. I definitely wouldn't blow an owl or crow call. Find some spots with fresh sign and where you heard gobbling. Maybe make a couple series of yelps and clucks then shut up.

I'm just the opposite. I'm going to be crazy aggressive at the opener. Get a tom so worked up he HAS to give me the 1 look I need to kill him. Run and gun, cover as much ground as fast as possible till you strike a bird, then call him in quick and kill him.

After the first weekend, I'm going to the hard to reach spots. Still running and gunning covering ground as fast as possible far away from likely access points.

Midway through the season, if I havent killed a bird and I'm desperate just to say I punched a tag, I'm setting up where there is sign and only calling softly every 10 to 15 min, and calling loudly once an hour.... but that isn't my style (but it will absolutely work).

Oh, and woodsman is absolutely correct. You will likely have better success from 10 to 2 when many softcore hunters have left the woods because it's time for a sammich.
