What's everyone's opinion on Decatur county. I just leased a 200acre tract out there. Anyone hunt this county? My brother, dad, and I will be the only ones on it. Most of it's tall pines that borders cutover and clearcuts. There's several shooter bucks on the property including a dandy 9. I'll upload some trailcam pics here later.

I hunt near there. I think it's one of the best area we have killed a few bucks over 140" over the years

That's good to hear. Do you guys ever have much trouble with poachers and trespassers in that area? Also, When is the rut typically for over there. I was told thanksgiving week and first week of December.

Yeah the rut is around that time. We don't have that much problem with poachers due to the land we hunt

Re: Decatur County Hunting

A couple of us leased a big farm over in that area a few years ago. There was some good deer on it but we had a huge problem with spot lighters and people shooting deer from the roads. If they shot a buck they usually drove out in the fields and picked them up or cut the head off. They just left the does laying for us to drag out of the fields. We didn't have many regular trespassers/hunters on foot as far as we could tell.

Our land in Decatur County has been in the family since the late 1890s. I've been hunting it for about 23 years. It can be a highly productive county depending on what you want. You'll never go without venison if that's what you're after. If you want bone, it's there, but you'll work for it and compete with spotlighters, night hunters, and trespassers like anywhere else. Make your presence known early and often on the property so people know someone's there. Trespassing issues on our place died down quickly once word got out we were frequenting the place. Get to know sheriff Byrd if you get the chance. He was the county's wildlife officer before he ran for sheriff. Good guy. Knows the county from top to bottom.

Thank you. That's a lot of good info. I've got plenty of public land spots where I can get meat for the freezer but I'm specifically targeting bucks on this lease. I'm really excited about the potential. The only thing that worries me is the poachers. I've thought about talking to a game warden or possibly the sheriff and seeing if they would patrol the area and keep an eye on if from time to time. Ultimately I'm not going to be able to stop everyone but at least I can prevent it to an extent.
