How many of you use decoys? I hunt mostly hardwoods and have never found decoys to be really effective. I guess if you hunt a lot of fields it might be different. Just wanted to hear opinions from you guys

I think Setterman uses them often... :poke:

I hunt mainly hardwoods and small fields. I've been very successful with decoys. I personally think it's the color of the head of the gobbler decoy

I hunt small fields but mostly hardwoods and have had more success with decoys in the woods than anywhere. At my farm, if a longboard can see that decoy of that jake and hears you calling to him it's on. Just my experience on my farm

I've had them work and I've seen birds run the other way like they saw Bigfoot. More often than not decoys have a negative effect for me

Not sure why I done it but last year I set up a Jake decoy in the bushes like he was hiding. It worked and I killed my first Turkey with my 410 that day. And I was hunting a field, problem was he was in a field I couldn't hunt so I had to get him across it

I'll use decoys when taking a kid on private, just to help position the bird. I stopped using them as I mainly hunt public, less I have to carry and have noticed that they spook more than they pull in on public as well.

I used to carry a hen or two but for the most part don't use them anymore. I bought one of those strutters years ago when they first came out (can't remember the name) but every bird ran the other way so it's been hanging in my barn for a long time collecting dust. Anybody wants it I'll make them a cheap cheap deal.

I had one of those as well.
I was actually trying to remember the name of it just the other day.

Pretty Boy... that was it. Just hit me.

I had it out one day and ended up going after a gobbling bird instead of waiting.
Basically made a half mile circle and ended up coming back to where I started but entered the field about 200 yards away from the decoy.
My buddy and I were like, what in the WORLD.

Looked like a big black truck tire or something.
No wonder I never had it work. LOL

Ended up giving it away.

Those are the ones that I have, the Pretty boy and Pretty girl. Maybe it is just how I have set them up, but every gobbler that has seen my setup has come in to them - well over two dozen times. I have never seen any negative effects. Funny how different birds will do different things.

I have had them spot my setup over 150 yards away and come running straight to them and beat the heck out of them. Also had them fly off the roost and land on the gobbler decoy (Pretty boy) before their feet hit the ground.....to beat the heck out of it. Also, I use a real fan....who knows? In my case, "if it aint broke, don't fix it"

Yep, Setterman is the TNdeer subject matter expect when it comes to turkey decoys. I'm almost certain he can give excellent information on pop up blinds as well. :poke:

I think these are the camo pants he wears too:
