Deer spleen

We've got a guy named G in our camp who loves deer liver. I was field dressing a buck I killed a while back and my bud pointed at the spleen and asked if I was gonna save the liver for G. I said "that's the spleen". He got sheepish and said "uh oh"........

I guess G likes deer spleen too....

:rotf:

Far as I am concerned, if you will eat liver from anything, you will eat anything. :)

I haven't tried the spleen. If there's no reason not to I guess I can try it. I'm not a fanatic when it comes to offal flavor, but my kids LOVE it for some reason.

I do have 8 kidneys soaking in the refrigerator right now, though.

For those that are concerned and hunting in CWD areas:

"Is it safe to eat venison?
The prions have never been found in muscle meat, even in infected deer. Officials are not recommending any general restrictions on consumption of deer meat. However, as a precaution, it is recommended that you do not eat deer or elk brains, spinal cord, eyes, spleen, tonsils or lymph glands (the tissue where the prions accumulate)."

Never tried the spleen, and maybe I won't ever, but those who don't eat heart, liver, and kidneys are missing out. If you don't like the offal flavor of liver or kidney it's very easy to grind it in with burger and especially sausage.

Unless you hunt with me, then don't worry about it. I think I had a total of 17 or 18 livers and 16 hearts this year. :tu:

I had someone think I was definitely father of the year when my kids asked about scavenging through their gut pile.
