I don't think so. I think Jalen is putting up numbers like everyone expected he might in the Big 12. Similar to how people were comparing Tua to Kyler last year, and saying that if they had been swapped, Tua's numbers and stats would somehow have been more phenomenal and Kyler just average.
Has Jalen grown as a QB? Yes, certainly. All of them have their routines and patterns and none are perfect. A good defensive coordinator will pick up on those patterns and disrupt them. That, IMO is how Auburn beat em in 2017, and how Georgia had them beat in the national championship until they put Tua in. At Bama, Jalen seemed ro fall into the rut of only wanting to utilize Calvin Ridley in the passing game. All their highlite big plays were Jalen to Ridley or when Jalen would scramble and run it himself. He didn't utiilize the weapons he had around him. Jalen also buckled under tackling pressure. If they blitzed him and also covered Ridley, then it was usually a sack for loss, or he would throw the ball away and they'd go 3 and out. Tua stepped in and just read the field and plays better, and utilized what was around him. He kept the defense off balance cause they didn't know what was coming next.
But at the same time, when Tua became starter, he also fell into a bad rut. Every possession of the ball, it seemed like he wanted to go for that big play...the long pass. He often waited on it too long on plays where it just wasn't there, and the pocket break down and then he get sacked or have to scramble. Sometimes both. He has gotten better at not going for a TD pass every snap, and just trying to move the ball and get 1st downs. If the play is there, he can usually make it happen and uses all his weapons. Jalen has too...he has started to use other receivers but looks like his goto guy is Lamb at Oklahoma. We've not really seen a team that has brought a lot of consistent pressure on him either...will be interesting to see how he does when that happens, and how he has improved in that area.
