Three of us(all new at turkey hunting) will be floating down the river trying locate and ambush a few gobblers this weekend. I hope the rain blows on through today.

What do you mean by floating trying to ambush? Trying to ambush from the boat or floating and listening for turkeys to get out and go hunt?

So in other words you're going poaching all weekend.

Awesome.....sweet mother of ......
Hope its public land and they're gonna get out of the boat once hearing gobbles. Otherwise it sounds like this to me too.

I can't think of a single river which has large stretches of public land on it except the hiwassee.

"Shooting or stalking turkeys from a boat in Shelby, Dyer, Tipton, Lauderdale, Haywood or Obion counties prohibited" - TWRA

Also Setterman, the Percy Priest WMA runs along a river for a good stretch of it.

There are numerous rivers in my area with huge amounts of public land that they run through. Then you have all of the headwaters of COE lakes.

There are a couple in west TN with several miles of public land, but it's illegal to "stalk or shoot" turkeys from a boat in those counties. There are lots of problems with this plan.

My land borders a river in west tn and we battle this tactic every year. Boats have plugs and sometimes they just happen to sink

Lakes I get, but rivers is different especially in this end of the state. Can you even snipe birds from boats? Where the heck is scn when you need him

Setterman there is lots of public land along rivers. I hunt a WMA that used to be TVA land bought up all around a river and its tributaries because they were going to build a dam and flood the land. When the dam project was stopped they had all this land along the river and now it's a WMA and you can float through much of it by the river.

Catman, is thinking of the same place as me. You could easly float the river and get a chance on a bird there.
yep I haven't floated it for turkeys but I have killed them near the river multiple times. Floating does sound like a good idea but I would hate for someone to walk in on me working a bird from a boat

Last time I hunted this WMA from a walk in spot, things went south. Got in early, walked in deep. Set up then had one hunter walk right past me. Then I seen another about 250 yards away. So I got up to move. Seen 5 hunters and a guy walking his dog that morning.

So I don't break any laws, exactly what is legal? I plan on floating to a few remote spots then get out and begin hunting. Will not be hunting from the boat and will be less likely to crash someone's hunt than just walking in.

The TN river in knox county is mainly public. Bakers creek is tva and other spots in tazewell is public on the lake. I was under the impression it was legal to hunt from a watercraft if the motor WAS NOT moving, EXCEPT in aforementioned counties.

sounds like fun!

I agree.....was actually working a bird one year and heard a boat then nothing, next thing I see is a head pop up over the levee and boooom. He was able to get to the bird and back in his boat before I could get across the field to him.
I also see them shooting them off the roost or as they fly across the river, pisses me off !
