Number 4 hit the dirt this morning before school. (I am a teacher). The owner of a farm beside the school that I can hunt told me he had been hearning a bird gobble on the farm,so I figured I would head after him before school this morning. He was roosted in the saddle of a ridge. He was hammering at everything this morning and I knew I needed to get close so that I could kill him as early as possible ( had to leave by 7:15). I got within about 75 yards of him and did some soft yelps and clucks. He answered me, but when he flew down he flew away from me off the ridge and into the open field beside the ridge. He gobbled a few times as he walked away, and when he was over a rise from me a few hunderd yards away I decided I would bust it across the saddle and try to get set up above him.
When I sat down he gobbled and was only about 100 yards away. I started in soft and he answered me. He would gobble at me, but he didnt want to come. I got out my box call (I rarely ever use one) and sent out a few jake yelps. He hammered..... and hammered and kept on hammering all the way in. At 6:30 he strutted his way to 39 steps from me and the 835 put the smack down on him. He had a 10 inch beard, and 7/8 spurs. My middle schoolers got to hear another turkey hunting story before we started this morning.
