Yesterday morning I met Rockhound in hopes that he or maybe both of us might get a fall turkey or two. I knew there were a couple flocks in this one area so we walked in about a mile and set up to listen. I brought my 12 gauge and left the bow in the truck, and had a feeling I'd regret that. Well I did, but then I didn't....

Hens started yelping on the roost off to the right. Then, the dreaded twigs popping to my left. 2 deer give me the stare down at less than 15 yards. When they run off, there are 6 deer total in the field. Bow sitting peacefully in the truck.

We covered a few miles through fields, creek bottoms, hills, ridges, privet thicket, and CRP. We found incredible sign where birds had roosted repeatedly, but the flock we were after escaped.

About 11 am, I had to head back so I could get home for other obligations. So we walk down the trail toward the truck. We found fresh scratch and I knew we had to be careful coming into the next field. Yep.... there were birds there. They saw movement but not enough. They went back to feeding and I called a few times on my wingbone as we sat behind some tall grass.

Finally they made their way over and the first bird showed himself in range. Rockhound let the 10 gauge bark while I got video. Then I dropped the camera and stood up, and shot another of the birds. The rest flew away, and another flock of birds way across the field ran off too. Went to get my bird, stepped it off at 50 yards, his was 45 yards. I'm shooting the same setup, NEF Pardner pump 12 gauge xx-full accu-choke Winchester Supreme high velocity 3" #5s. the turkey dropped in his tracks, longest shot I have ever made and I think was Rockhound's longest with that particular gun.

On the way out with our two birds, we got to the last field before the road, and there was another whole flock of hens that started running. Rockhound almost got one, but the flock scattered.
