A total of 12 first rounders were 3 star (or less) recruits out of high school.

One had Zero stars (Allen).

Worth remembering for late bloomers or other guys overlooked by Power5 recruiters.

Pick #1 Mayfield was a 2x walk on.

Pick #5 DE, Bradley Chubb said he was once ranked in the 700's as a prospect before landing at NC state.

Josh Allen pick#7 QB, had to send 1000's of emails out all over the country to try and get coaches to watch his film 0 D1 school offers. Quote from Allen "I was a 0 star"

That was just a couple guys in the top 10 picks they was many others in the first 2 rounds.

Think they said the LB that the cowboys took in round #1 was playing 8 on 8 football in highscool and was a walk on a Boise state?

There are 32 five stars picked each year out of approximately 3,000 kids that sign each year with division 1 schools. The majority of the kids that are signed are 3 and 2 star kids. With the odds it makes since considering that they have 3 to 4 years to catch up.

Not surprising at all since there are several thousand 3-stars(or worse) per year. ...typically only about 30 5 stars per year.

Heck, every high school graduate is a "3 star or worse"

If you are trying to make a point that 3 stars are better athletes (or pan out more often) than 5 stars it doesn't pass simple statistical analysis.

A few players might slip through the recruiting services ranked improperly, or they may develop much farther in college than others, but on the larger scale they are pretty accurate.

The same can be said about the NFL Draft, a few 3rd through 5th round draft picks may go on to be phenomenal players, but you would be right way more often than not to pick the higher draft picks to be the better players.

The chance of a 5 star prospect making it to the NFL is just about 50%. The chance of a 3 star is only about 5%.

With all of the star gazing, that's really not a very good percentage. BTW, what is the definition of "making it to the NFL"?

I'm sure every team has them, but it seems TN has had more 5-star busts than anybody the past few years. And I realize that they must be developed, and that falls on the coaches, but a lot of these guys just don't cut it.

It really tarnishes the recruiting services when it is obvious that outside factors play a role in how many stars a player gets. How many 4 star players get a bump to 5 star after they commit to Bama ;) ? It would be a fascinating study to research Bama's last 5 classes and see where those recruits started out on the "star" system as sophomores or whatever age they start, and then where they finished after they verballed to Bama.

I agree you got 1000's of 3* & lower football players leaving college every year. And only a hand full of 5* players draft eligible a year.

when you hear story's about a guy who was a 0* turning into one of the best QBs in the country getting drafted top 10 with out receiving a single D1 offer. & a recruit who was once ranked in the 700's as a prospect turning into the best pass rusher of the 2018 draft and earning a top 5 pick.

I personally think that is cool as heck is all.

5* players over 3* players of course, but it does show even with all the scouts, and how big of a deal recruiting is now days a few diamonds do fall though the cracks.

So you can't be a UNDRAFTED free agent, and make a team? ;)
