I had just closed the fence....and loaded my gun.....thought I heard a bird gobble....but dismissed it, walked 10 yds and had to get down....birds were probably 75yds away, two toms strutting and a gaggle of jakes. They started moving back to where the cows were and where my ground blind was....so I got luck and made a huge circle hoping they didn't see me. I decided against the blind. I snuck down the tree line and got in tight. They were 50 yds away and walking on a trail that would put them 5 yds from me. When one of the toms was at 20, I thought about shooting....because the cows were making their way towards them.....but decided against it. I heard something to my right.....I looked out my right eye and I had 2 jakes less than 10 yds from me feeding. I hugged that tree tight. The cows started mooing....and the toms fired up. All the jakes were in the field moving away.....so I moved my gun around the tree...finally a Tom came out in the open. I was worried about it being a jake.....but his head was twice as big as theirs and finally I saw the beard in the grass....so I shot. I didn't make a single call. Camouflage was my friend today.....that and being in the right place at the right time.
