this morning got me thinking, when Josh and I were walking in we had some owls going off and in turn heard the toms gobble 5-6 times from it. The odd part was it was literally still pitch black out lol, I mean like 5:30am at the latest. What got me thinking was in my 25 years of turkey hunting it is super rare to hear birds gobble when its pitch black out. Ive heard it from time to time on thunder or something a while after sundown but VERY few times have I heard them gobble when you cant even see the ground to walk haha. Just found it super cool to hear them so early in the morning.

I recall one years ago I named the "Quarter-Til" turkey...he fired up every morning by 5:45 and early in the season it was still black dark.

I can't figure them out.... had one gobble at 530 ( bright moon tho, we were casting big shadows on the way in) Sun am, didnt say another peep till 605, then went nuts with the other 2 lbs and 5 jakes till flydown. I knew it drove the guy hunting my fenceline who was owl hooting and calling his head off crazy when the group came straight to me instead of him. Thank goodness they were roosted on me or one prob would gotten shot out of the tree

Yesterday morn, they gobbled great starting at 605. One bird gobbled 10 times before he pitched down and came right in, another gobbled only once, while another gobbled 150 times before waiting to fly down only after he called the hens to the tree he was in.

They certainly have their own personalities and dispositions. I just hate the ones that don't gobble at all and come sneaking in to a call

Had one hammering at 5:30 Sunday morning on account of two owls having a moonlight conversation...

I've heard the odd gobble in the pitch dark, well before first light. I think I even heard one this year already. I've also heard one gobble in the evening until it was pitch dark.

It isn't common, but I don't think it's uncommon either.
To me those ones when it's pitch black out are true shock gobbles. Gobbling at thunder, owls, coyotes

Those gobbles in the dark of night are probably a reflex response to a dream he's having; kind of like we have when we dream and something is coming at our head and we duck or we're trying to yell at something or somebody but its just a muffle.

yeah I have heard them often in the evenings doing it, just not much in the morning times. may just be the places I have hunted that makes it uncommon for me. Was neat to hear either way.

As for turkey hunting easily at least an hour before daylight we've been running dogs at nite, coon hunting, and had a thunderstorm come up 10 or 11 at night and it start thundering and had them gobble. I think any time they are awake they're just like humans they can be vocal. Also I assure you they don't just gobble during the Spring they gobble all times of the year you're just not there to hear it. granted, Springtime is when they do most of their Goblin to assemble and breed hens, but it is part of their normal vocabulary

This past Sat opening morning I had one gobble at 5:15. He gobbled just that one time. Next gobbles all started at 6:05 from many birds.

I don't remember the actual time but back when I turkey hunted alot we were getting out of the truck at the farm and were getting our stuff together.
I am sure it was at least 1 1/2 hours before shooting light, and before we left the truck we heard 2 or 3 different birds firing off.
I looked at my buddy and said, it's gonna be a GOOD day. :)
