Now I haven't been out West, but I was blessed enough to be drawn for the TN elk hunt 3 years ago.  My Browning A-Bolt 30/06 with the Boss system was the gun I used.  One Remington 180 grain Core Lokt to the boiler room from 150 was all it took.  Hope this helps.
