After being fortunate to limit out earlier in the week, I devoted the rest of the week to help my dad get another. I'll be honest, when he was in the hospital for 10 days and ICU 4 of those, turkeys were the furthest thing from my mind. Plus the virus had zapped my strength as well.
But when he made a dramatic improvement and was discharged from the hospital 2 weeks ago, I held out hope that he just might be able to go before season closed. He was still very weak, but made enough improvement that he thought he could go.
We went to our property Tuesday for the first time this year. I had pics of gobblers using food plots early, and we gave them time to breed the hens.
Well, Tuesday and Thursday were busts other than hens. Got one to answer tues one time but that was it. But checking the time-lapse trail cam confirmed that two were still in the area.
We struck out again yesterday but gave it one last shot this morning. Still didn't hear anything, but around 7:20 central a gobbler came in to the plot, but I could not coax him to come to the other side. He stood on the far side in the shade in full strut.
A few mins later another one came in just picking. Then the strutter started breeding a hen that we hadn't seen. After they were done she started picking and ever so slowly worked our way with the strutter zig-zagging behind her. The other one appeared to be leaving, but then turned and me a beeline toward us.
Dad dropped him! 2 yr old with maybe 1/2" spurs.
So we doubled opening day, and he gets another on the final day that we could go.
There were several answered prayers throughout this season!
