I know I am a bit ahead of myself, we still have plenty of spring season left and a whole summer before fall turkey season opens again.

But with all these birds still hanging around oak trees, I've bumped plenty of them while hunting and it got me thinking about tactics in the late fall when I can kill 6 birds a day in the county I hunt.

Is it common to run and gun aggressively and shoot whatever you can sneak into range? Is it a better idea to shoot hens and leave the gobblers for the spring (I know this could mainly be a matter of opinion).

I can just imagine locating one of the winter flocks during the fall season and setting up ahead of and ambushing them, kill one or two or however many I could get a bead on before they run off. I'll be hunting for meat during the fall season and Maury county is covered with them so there should be plenty to go around.

I've also heard of running out and scaring the flock in all directions, and then setting up and calling them back because they'll be trying to re-group.

Sorry for the distraction, I was just wondering who fall hunts and how you do it.

Now back to chasing long beards...

I just set up where i normally see turkey during deer season...they will uselly stay in the same areas....so i just wait on them to show up and blast away......i have never had any luck calling to them in the fall......i just hunt them like i do deer and most of the time it works out....

Ditto. this works well.

good idea. I hear kee kees are popular in the fall but I won't know how well they work till I try. Better to know where they move and feed (scratches and droppings are the easiest) and set up ahead of them. Thats what I will probably do
