My dad and I ventured to middle TN early this morning and we were not disappointed in our old standby farm. We were greeted with three gobblers roosted together on the edge of the back field. We split up early in case hens led them away from my calling as happens so many times. Two came into the field but soon went back in the woods and away from the property. But one of the three would continue gobbling off and on so that I was able to keep tabs on them.
At 8:30 I called dad and had him come up there with me. After 9:00 the one that had been answering my aggressive calling throughout the morning sounded closer. I could not see one corner of the field from my setup but dad was to my left about 50 yds and was clear of the cedar that was blocking my view.
Anyway at 9:45 the gobbler slipped into the field edge and was strutting and slowly working toward me. I had no idea he was there. Dad was torn on letting him come on toward me but then common sense prevailed and he took the 30 yd shot when presented.
Pretty good for 76 yrs old and I thank the Lord that we were able to have this experience one more time!
Great bird to start the season!
