I am thinking about getting a good box or two before next spring. Just looking to get some opinions on some of your favorite box calls (custom or other). And wood combinations if you have any favorites. Thanks for any input.

There are so many good options out there right now that it's impossible to say. Are you wanting a loud, long distance box for locating? A smaller, softer box for working a bird? If you have even the slightest interest is turkeys or turkey calls, please go to the NWTF convention at Opry Mills in February. Play with 200-300 box calls and pick the one (or two) you like the best. One-piece boxes are a little more rugged, but also more expensive.

If you're really wanting to buy one earlier, here is my sort list:

favorite box call is the one that isn't bulky or squeaky in my pocket.... oh wait, that's none of them. Well some do sound nice, and I have a Woods Wise wet hen box call that sounds good, but I rarely ever take it in the woods with me. Gone to pretty much a tube call, wingbone call and a slate for backup.

I am planning on attending the NWTF in Nashville. I have never been but had made up my mind that next year I will be there. Just curious what some of the favorites are. I will check those calls out S Sportsman. Thanks

I will have to check on those turpins also. I have read a lot of good reviews on a custom call maker by the name of Albert Paul from Mississippi. They are not cheap but I guess it would be better than buying 3 or 4 store bought box calls and not using them. Anyone have any knowledge of Pauls calls?

I also don't use a whole lot of box calls but when you go up there for sure check out woodhaven and oak ridge game calls with jimmy Shaffer he makes outstanding calls.

Billy White's "Hustlin Hen" box call. This is the best custom box I've ever run and not to bad on the wallet either.

I talked with Albert Paul and decided on a eastern red cedar box with walnut lid. I couldn't be more happy with it. It has almost got me wanting to order another wood combo from him. I have also talked with Billy White about the hustlin hen. That may be my next one. Thanks for the info guys.

I'll second that!! If you don't have a Robert Clifft box call you need one. They're appropriately named "The Last Call". Look for his booth at the NWTF Convention in Nashville next month or PM me and I'll give you his contact information. You can call him and he'll play them over the phone for ya.
