Has anyone tried these shells and what was your thoughts on them, I love them but are hard to find for the 12 gauge 3 1/2" mags

havent tried em personally, but ive heard good things about the federal heavyweight flight control shells. ive heard they shoot well out of just about any choke that doesnt have the wad strippers in it.

I tried them, to say the least..... I wasn't very impressed, would have rather had my money back.

But that might just be my set-up.....

Now if you are planning on being at the VOUS in a couple of weeks, I can hook you up with two boxes of 12ga 3.5" (#4 & #5 shot) for a discounted price.......

With a non-ported turkey choke, I obtained the most consistenly uniform patterns with them, and denser patterns at 40 yards than any other copper-plated lead turkey loads, using #5 shot size.

I had less favorable results with #6 shot, but that was with all makes of shells, not just the Federals, as in my #5 patterns were comparably dense, and more uniform, than my #6 patterns.

Those "heavyweights" are not the standard Federal Flight Control Turkey load you'll usually see on the shelf. I tried those, too, but they are so "heavy", that you get significantly fewer pellets in an ounce of shot. In my testing, the Windchester Elite Extended Range (about 10% heavier than lead) seemed to be the best overall turkey load for me.

Had the Federal heavyweights patterned well with #6 shot, I'd have been more impressed. They were fine with #5, but not as dense as the Winchester Extendeds in #5.

Ditto.
Did you try the #7s? The 7s are the only thing ive really heard much about and its all been good.

I couldn't find the Federal Heavyweights in a #7, but was impressed with the idea of a size 7 shot having more punch than a #5 standard lead.

The problem with the #6's was in part due to their being so many less pellets in an ounce (compared to lead & since each pellet is so "heavy"), and I think my tight choke was deforming the #6's worse than the 5's, resulting in the 5's being about as dense as the 6's.

I have a Mossberg 835 and I change the factory choke (670? I think) to a 680 (or 660 to a 670) and got a whole lot better pattern out of it. At forty yards I was knocking over my 20x24 piece of plywood that had supports behind it. The wadden would bounce off the target at that range also. It had probably a 30 degree tilt from verticle. It has some knockdown at that range. Killed a few coyotes at that range, no problem what so ever. By far the hardest kicking shells I ever shot, got to get me some more before turkey season.

From above in my previous reply.....

I would like to come but its just a little to far for me to go right now. If you would like to make other arrangements somehow I would to take them off your hands. Thanks.

I tried the standard Federal flight control shells in my 835 and was not impressed. May be because I have a ported Hastings choke. I didn't try them with the factory choke installed. I tried the 5 and 6 shot. My friend uses them in his Mossy 500 and loves them. I get much better results out of the Winchester shells.

I think where the FliteControl wads are giving an advantage is with non-ported chokes, and maybe a more noticable advantage with factory "full" rather than the tighter "turkey" chokes.

I was testing them with a non-ported choke, and they unquestionably provided more uniform and denser patterns than several other makes of copper-plated lead turkey loads (in that set-up).

I've had good luck with the copper plated #5 3.5" H.V. Flite Control with a 870SM and a .665 Jelly Head. I know they are recommended for use with a non-ported choke, but I have no complaints with my set up.
Thinking about trying to find some 3" same load to try.

I tried them in 2 different guns and they just didnt shoot worth a $&!# in either one, worst pattern of all the brands of shells I shot, but a guy at work loves those things and I've heard other people that have good luck also.
