To say the hens have been giving me fits would be an understatement...they can make connecting on a tom virtually impossible at times and they have been whooping my tail. Other than a silent opening day, I've been absolutely covered up every day with gobbling birds...but the HENS!. :bash:

Finally started the morning with not 1 but 3 talkative and HENLESS toms...pitched off the limb and walked right up my gun barrel. For those that have thus far been out-competed by oodles of hens hang in there; the odds of closing the deal might juuuuust be starting to improve a tiny bit.

A henned up Tom can be displaced by another bird and be ripe for the killing at any time... never know what you will be dealing with that particular day until you hit the woods. Just keep up the persistence, and one will be in the mood sooner or later.

Lots of hens bodes well for your local population, so it certainly isn't all bad!

Congrats on your turkey!

Great Gobbler! Congrats! Henned up birds are tough to deal with. I am glad to hear you found some birds without any. The hens are killing me right now! It's a matter of time as you have proven! Congrats again!

If there's any "drawback" to having plenty of birds to chase that I'm completely happy to deal with for a week or 2, it's fighting hens. Even on days I drag my tail back to house griping about the durn hens is a blessing...they're the reason I heard gobbling, saw strutting, and had my heart racing for a spell in the first place.

I'd rather have henned-up toms than none at all. I just smile (through clenched teeth), shake my head and go on...and look forward to knowing it'll get better before it gets worse.

As mentioned, it's great that you have an abundance of hens. They make turkey hunting possible. Most people hunt the gobblers but when they're henned up big time at least to some degree they need to actually hunt those hens instead.
