Finally after 20 days of turkey season a bird bites the dust! I hunted with my brother (ddgonehntn on here) Friday morning and we heard a few birds but they just were not interested in our calling. So about 9:30 we ran out to Krystals to get a biscuit and we went to another place. Well dd and I split up. He went to a ridge we had birds on last weekend and I took off walking on a logging road. I would walk 50 or 60 yards and call, or call every time I came around the point of a ridge. After about an hour I came around a point and did about 3 cuts and led into about 5 or 6 yelps on my mouth call. He hammered right off under me in the hollow! Sounded like a jake though. I thought, oh well they all eat the same. So I scrambled around trying to find a tree to set against. I thought he would probably come straight out of the hollow and onto the road so I finally sat down and cut a few more times and he gobbled again! This time it sounded like he was coming up a ridge to my right though. There is a 4wheeler path coming out this ridge so I figured he might walk out this path right to me! I scooted around so I am facing the 4wheeler path and now the road is to my left and kinda behind me. I sat still for about 5 minutes and never heard or saw him. I was starting to worry because I knew this bird was within 70 yards when he gobbled the first time. I just happened to look down the road and he is in full strut not 25 yards away! :o Oh Great! Now somehow I gotta swing my gun way left and shoot across my body! All I could see was a little bit of his head and some of his fan so I still wasnt sure if it was a gobbler or not. Then another bird hopped out on the road in plain sight! It was a jake with about a 3 inch beard. I thought well they are probably both jakes but Im still gonna try and shoot the strutter! I wait for 3 to 4 minutes thinking he would work up the road and I would get a good shot at him without having to move around. Nothing doing! All he would do is blow into strut and then do a circle. So everytime he would do a circle and his fan blocked his head I would move a little providing the jake was out of sight. It took me about 5 minutes to get my gun worked around but I was finally on this bird! Still all I could see was some of his neck and fan. I thought, well do I wait for the perfect shot or try and kill him??? Ah screw waiting for the perfect shot! I know how that always works out! :D I settled in on what I could see of his neck and squeeze oh I mean pulled or actually more like jerked the trigger probably! ;) After the shot I cant see him but I hear the FLOP! Waahhhoooooo! Number 1 down! I sat back against the tree and thanked the Lord for an awesome hunt! I jumped up and took off running to see my bird. I hopped onto the road where I could see him and Holy cow! Its a longbeard! I think I was dancing back out that logging road! lol :D

Just guessing around 19-20 pounds
1 inch spurs
9.5 in beard

Mossberg 500 With tru-glo Gobble Stopper choke and Win Supreme HV 3in #6s
Primos Double A-frame with bat cut mouth call

Sorry for the long post but I'm just a little excited! lol

Great looking bird! It never happens like on tv or dvd does it? In my years of hunting I've only seen an animal "act" like it does on the tv shows one time. That was a coyote that I could watch circle down wind to my call. It was so exciting I missed it. :( Oh well. :D

Fantastic hunt and write up! I wish you had that on video it would have been funny seeing you try to sneak around to shoot him. :)

Perserverance, got to love it. Congrats, and glad it all worked out.

Waiting for the perfect shot is for the movies, if you can see his head, take it off.

yep

wow congrats!... were you on public or private land? More info on your gun? How long is your barrel etc? I have a mossberg 500 as well, but mine is the field version with 28" barrel. I put the full choke in mine and have wrapped it completely with no-mar camo tape.

I am slowly learning this! I have missed a bunch of shots at game trying to wait for that perfect shot!

It is private land. Nothing fancy about the old slapberg! lol I bought it off a member on here. Deer Assassin I think. It is the field version just covered with Mossy Oak camo. It has the 28in barrel on it. I use it for about everything! Crows, rabbits, squirrels, trap, turkeys, and it hasn't failed me yet! With that Tru-glo choke and polished barrel it will stack pellets in there at 35-40 yards! It loves those Winchester 6s.
